Integral to the design of buildings and interior spaces is the design of the external spaces around them. Streetscape is created first by the built form that encloses it and the relationship between building and urban design is key to making successful places. Equally important is the design of these spaces, from lighting and planting to hard surfaces and street furniture, with a real understanding of how people use and inhabit them. Design of successful play spaces also demands an understanding of how young people use them, to give opportunities for creative play and safe social interaction.
