The clients brief was for a single storey classroom extension to an existing classroom so that it is of a more practical size to be used to host the Foundation year learning group. The new extension also incorporates a large external canopy area for outside play. Alterations to the existing openings of the classroom were also made to allow for increased natural daylight into the classroom and a more direct connection between the outside spaces.
The new extension retains the same scale as the existing classroom and the materials palette reflects the schools new hall, a recent development at the site which lies directly opposite the extended classroom. The canopy incorporates bright colours to evoke a sense of excitement in the children the classroom is to accommodate.
The existing courtyard area, adjacent to the classroom, is utilised to provide the external play area and incorporates areas of paving and soft play.
