This new extension will provide new Swim/spa room with sitting area and will open out on to an extended area of existing decking area via high thermal performance sliding folding glazed doors, which allow the whole room to connect seamlessly with the outdoor space in summer and maximise afternoon/evening sun.
Siting of the extension building was critical in order to minimise loss of light / sky view to the existing living room, which are also proposed to be improved by the provision of an enlarged glazed opening. It also provides a strong visual link between the swim/spa area and the main living space allowing monitoring of the pool area from this space. Openable roof lights above allow views into sky from the pool area and maximise natural ventilation possibilities.
The client wanted extension to sit comfortably with the existing building and the overall building to remain a cohesive unit, as oppose to a “bolt on” addition. With this in mind the extension picks up on materials and forms from the existing building, and the scale kept subservient to the main building. Strip windows at varying heights on the end of the building provide ‘picture frame’ views down the garden from all levels, be it standing, sitting or swimming.
